Clinicians should be aware that systemic hypothermia has been associated with medical complications in the head injured population prior to considering this treatment modality.AANS Online Case StudiesThe AANS Online Case Studies available on MyAANS.org now posts 27 cases covering vascular, pediatric, tumor, spine and functional cases. The cases present an interactive educational experience driven by contributions from neurosurgeons, and are free to AANS members. The AANS Online Case Study project is designed to serve as a repository for neurosurgical cases that are not limited to viewing an article or abstract. The repository offers a comment function that allows members to interact with each other in a secure and confidential environment. Because viewers' comments are posted almost immediately, colleagues across the country have the option of gathering online to review a case and "discuss" it, or viewing and adding to cumulative commentary over time. Guidelines for the Performance of Fusion Procedure for Degenerative Disease of the Lumbar SpineThis guideline is the first of its kind and is the culmination of 2 years of joint collaboration between neurologic and orthopedic spine surgeons. Because there has been a lack of standardization in the past for treatment of degenerative diseases of the lumbar spine, an evidence-based comprehensive set of guidelines to clarify patient care and best practice standards was necessitated. In an effort to better provide standardized and quality patient care, seventeen topics related to the lumbar spine and preoperative diagnostic and treatment options were analyzed and recommendations were developed with rationale and scientific foundation for each topic.Outcomes Research and Spine SurgeryPeter C. Gerszten, M.D., M.P.H., Joseph T. King, M.D., M.S.C.E.An article which advocates the importance of measuring patient outcomes and quality of life measurements (and making them publicly available), so that this information can serve as a basis for involving patient perspectives for both making medical decisions and in judging the results of treatment in spinal surgery.CNS Links for Guidelines for Practice ManagementImportant links for the management of traumatic spine and brain injury. |
